LOOKBOOK: PEPPER AND PISTOL
This fall, it's time to send in the clowns... Forget black, forget dour, forget monastic; Pepper & Pistol will get you to smile this fall.
The collection, titled “Fashion of Clowning”, is a stylish twist on classic three-ring uniforms. As designer Katrin Wiens explains, “The collection is inspired by the circus, the sinister clowns, the flying acrobats; it is a show of sequined wonders and phunny phools [sic]!”
That translates into lots of sparkle, plenty of ruffles, and a print featuring the silhouette of a trapeze artist, mid-flight. But don’t think that it will turn you into a sideshow; like all of its collections, Pepper & Pistol knows how to walk the line between hip and hokey. Even if you don’t have the courage to wear the sequined tromp l’oeil band jacket dress to work (no surprise that it’s called the tiger trainer dress), there are pieces like the harlequin dress, which features a retro-inspired short-sleeve dress with a few tame ruffles around the chest.
Like a night at the circus, it’s a little weird, a little over-the-top, but also really fun. And with burlap in heavy rotation on the spring ’09 runways, and playing-it-safe ensembles dominating much of the fall ’09 shows, it’s a relief to know that someone wants us to have a good time dressing up. Go ahead, send in the clowns.
